How the generator decides CGST and SGST against IGST
The split follows the place of supply, not the customer. When your state and the place of supply match, the bill carries CGST and SGST at half the rate each. When they differ, it carries IGST at the full rate. Union territories without a legislature levy UTGST in place of SGST.
This is the one calculation a hand-built spreadsheet gets wrong most often, because it is not a property of the item or of the customer. It is a property of where the supply lands. A Maharashtra shop billing a Maharashtra customer splits 18% into CGST 9% and SGST 9%. The same shop billing a Gujarat customer charges IGST 18% instead, and the total the customer pays is identical either way.
Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu levy UTGST rather than SGST on a local supply. Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir are union territories with legislatures, so they levy SGST like any state. The generator has that table built in, so picking the state is all you have to do.
Set the place of supply and watch the totals panel change heads. Nothing else on the form has to be touched.
Rates that already include GST
Tick "rate includes GST" on a line and the generator works backwards: it divides the rate by one plus the tax rate to find the taxable value, then charges the tax on that. A Rs 118 inclusive rate at 18% becomes a taxable value of Rs 100 and Rs 18 of tax.
A kirana counter prices inclusive, because the sticker on the packet is what the customer pays. A B2B seller prices exclusive, because tax is added at the invoice. Both are normal, and one bill can carry a mix of the two, so the tick box is per line rather than a setting for the whole document.
The round-off row is where the leftover paise go. GST is computed per line and the total is rounded once, at document level, to the nearest rupee. The generator shows that round-off as its own row instead of quietly folding it into the tax, which is what makes the bill reconcile against your books.
Where a generator stops and billing software starts
This page computes one bill correctly. What it cannot do is remember it. Consecutive numbering per financial year, a party ledger, credit notes against an original invoice and an export your accountant can use all need something that keeps records.
That is a real limit, not a sales line. Nothing typed into this page is stored, so it cannot number your next bill after this one, tell you what a customer still owes, or turn a return into a credit note carrying the original invoice number and date on its face. For a bill you raise once, that does not matter. For a bill you raise every day, it is the whole job.
Invoice Saathi picks up exactly there, and the arithmetic does not change on the way: the engine that computed the bill above is the same one the app bills with, so the totals you see here are the totals you would see there.
